Exploring the World of Wood: A Guide to Choosing the Best Wood for Your Furniture

Wood is the foundation of everything we build at MDM Design Studio. Understanding different species helps you make the right choice for your project.

Wood is the foundation of everything we build at MDM Design Studio. It is a living material—each piece unique in grain, color, and character—and choosing the right species for your project is one of the most meaningful decisions in the design process. Here is a guide to the woods we work with most frequently and what makes each one special.

White Oak

White oak has become the defining wood of contemporary American furniture design, and for good reason. Its tight, straight grain is clean and versatile—equally at home in a traditional library and a minimalist kitchen. White oak takes stain beautifully, accepts cerusing (a technique that accentuates the grain by filling it with a contrasting color), and is strong enough for demanding applications like kitchen cabinetry and dining tables. It is MDM’s most commonly specified wood.

Walnut

American black walnut is the connoisseur’s choice. Its rich chocolate tones deepen with age, its grain is complex and varied, and its natural oils give it a warmth that no stain can replicate. Walnut is our go-to for clients who want furniture that feels substantive and serious—executive desks, master bedroom sets, statement credenzas.

Teak

Teak is the premier wood for outdoor applications. Its natural silica content makes it extraordinarily resistant to moisture, insects, and temperature changes. Teak weathers to a silver-grey patina if left untreated, or can be oiled to maintain its warm golden color. MDM uses teak for custom outdoor dining tables, porch furniture, and deck cabinetry.

Reclaimed Wood

Reclaimed wood brings history into your home. Salvaged from old barns, factories, and warehouses, it carries marks of age—nail holes, saw marks, weathering—that give each piece an irreplaceable character. MDM works with reclaimed white oak and reclaimed heart pine on projects where a sense of provenance and patina is part of the brief.

Specialty and Exotic Species

Beyond our most-used species, MDM sources specialty woods for clients seeking something truly distinctive. Maccassar ebony, olive ash burl, teak, spalted maple, and quartersawn white oak all appear in our portfolio. These materials command a premium but deliver a visual drama that no standard species can match.

How to Choose

The right wood depends on the application, the aesthetic, the environment, and the budget. A kitchen calls for different priorities than a dining table, which calls for different priorities than a bedroom set. The best way to choose is to start a conversation with our team—we will help you understand the trade-offs and make a decision you will be happy with for decades.
